Old Boy IIs lose out at Shaw’s Bridge

On a lovely afternoon for rugby, Rainey O.B. 3rd XV turned in a very entertaining display to overwhelm Banbridge 4th XV by 42-11 at Hatrick Park where conditions underfoot were surprisingly firm.

Getting off to a lively start, wing McQuillan, who was to convert all six Rainey tries, fluffed an early penalty opportunity, but flanker Walls took it on from the drop out before the ball was moved along the line to full-back O’Neill who raced in from forty yards.

Walls was prominent again as veteran centre C.O’Neill ghosted in for try number two and with the pack continuing to impress with their offloading and driving they added two more tries in the next ten minutes through second-row Patterson and McQuillan to lead 28-0.

Banbridge kicked a penalty before out-half Beattie, who got his line moving well, made a lovely break only to lose his footing just short and was engulfed as he attempted to crawl over.

Banbridge kicked another penalty right on half-time.

Banbridge made most of the running after the break, but Rainey hit them with a try from deep. Impressive hooker O’Loane and P.O’Neill launched the counter with play moving acrossfield.

The visitors appeared to have snuffed out the threat, but the ball was recycled for scrum-half Smith to send young second-row Deehan in at the posts for a well-deserved try.

As the pace and injuries began to tell on both teams, Banbridge scored in the corner, but Rainey had the final say when excellent interplay between backs and forwards released O’Loane for a try which his industry merited.

Pace behind the scrum helped Rainey to a 32-12 victory over Banbridge 5 at Meadowbank. Banbridge scored an early try, with out-half Devlin putting Rainey on the scoreboard with a penalty.

No.8 Coleman broke to give his side the lead with a converted try. Devlin then crossed to the right of the posts and centre McElhone made it 22-7 with their third try.

Devlin added a penalty on the stroke of half-time.

McElhone grabbed his second try to increase Rainey’s lead, Banbridge picking up a late consolation score.
