Reds sign off in champion style
Cookstown 4 Lisnagarvey 2 COOKSTOWN finished their historic Premier League season on a high lsat Satuday with a convincing win over second placed Lisnagarvey.
However, it was Lisnagarvey who started the brighter and indeed took a 2-0 lead through Daniel Buser and Brian Waring as they looked to spoil the party at Coolnafrankey.
Cookstown battled hard to retain their proud record and Andy Barbour finished neatly from an acute angle after good work by Steve Cuddy and Colin Donaldson just before half time.
The equaliser came from Ivan Steen after a fast flowing move on the right hand side with Gareth Cuddy and Colin Donaldson linking up to the raptures of the home crowd.
The lead was only a matter of time and it was ex-International Barbour who grabbed a brace turning and shooting at the near post to beat keeper Lunn.
Fittingly, it was Hutchinson who would put the icing on the Cookstown championship cake with a penalty corner variation late in the game to seal the match.
The win meant Cookstown had gone the entire season unbeaten in the league and eventually won the league by a massive nine points after eleven wins and three draws.
This meant they went one better than their 1983 counterparts who lost their final game after securing the title.
The win also meant that the Reds won ALL their home games this season - both in league and cup - an unparallelled achievement.
The season isn't over yet however, as Cookstown will now take part in the All-Ireland Championships at the beginning on May, where they will try to continue their success.
