Physical Harlequins outmuscle Ladies

Belfast Harlequins 4 Cookstown Ladies 1

Cookstown Ladies met Belfast Harlequins in their first league match of the season.

The Reds started the match well, applying a lot of pressure on the Harlequins defence. Louise Donaghey won Cookstown’s first short corner within a few minutes. However, with several chances the Reds were unable to covert.

Harlequins then created a counter attack and won a short. From a straight strike they went 1-0 up.

Cookstown fought back hard and a well struck cross from Rachel Stewart found Louise Donaghey at the penalty spot to make it 1-1.

The Belfast team continued to press the Reds and from a defensive error won yet another short corner. This time Harlequins drag flicker placed the ball low into the right hand side of the net leaving the scoreline 2-1.

Cookstown had spells of good attacking play but Harlequins were much more physical both on and off the ball.

During the second half Cookstown found it hard to get out of there own half and Harlequins converted another short corner to make it 3-1.

Harlequins’ fourth goal came from a unmarked player at Cookstown’s back post.

Cookstown’s player of the match was Jessica Richardson.
