RAINEY travelled to Lisnagarvey on Saturday for their quarter final meeting with Lisnagarvey. It was destined to be a tough match with Lisnagarvey sitting high in the their league but the Rainey girls spirits were high and they were eager to get onto the pitch.
The match started fast from the whistle, with Rainey winning a short corner within the first few minutes, however we were unable to realise our chance and Lisnagarvey made a break from their 22 yard line, moving the ball seamlessly down the pitch and into our circle, scoring on the break in the first 5 minutes of the game. Rainey’s spirits were not dampened and they answered back within a few minutes, Megan Mulholland, slotting the ball into the back of the Lisnagarvey goals.
The game continued at a fast pace with the first half finishing 3-1, after 2 further goals from Megan Mulholland and Nicole Heaney, however, Lisnagarvey were putting us under serious pressure at the back, the defence of Jenna Bowman, Louise McMaster, Dawn Mitchell, Catherine Walshe, and Rosie Taylor were doing tremendous work making tackles and clearing the ball out wide to the Rainey forwards and midfield.
Rebecca Allen as goalkeeper was kept busy with the Lisnagarvey attack and made an impressive and almost unbelievable save with her stick leaving Rainey in a strong position going into the second half.
The second half started with the same ferocity displayed in the first, Lisnagarvey were not going to give this game away. The ball travelled form end to end both teams making attacks and driving hard for further goals, mid field players Claire Mulholland, Maeve McNally, Karla Garvin, Rachel Clarke covered several miles in the middle of the park, with Zara Bell, Megan Mulholland, Nicole Heaney, Lorraine Hyndman and Jayne Allen all moving and making runs in order to outwit the Lisnagarvey defence.
However, mid way through the 2nd half Lisnagavey got a second goal, with the score now 3-2, Rainey were back in a precarious position. The goal was an incentive to put in the final push, the Rainey girls got right back in the game and their hard work was rewarded with a fantastic shot from the left edge of the circle from Lorraine Hyndman, it hit the back board like a bullet. 4-2 and ten minutes to the end, Rainey just had to hold tight. They could have moved into a more defensive style of playing but the hunger was there, and the best form of defence is of course attack, and so they continued.
The final whistle blew, the game finished 4-2, Rainey are through to the semi finals where they meet Saintfield 1st XI, having played them twice this season already, losing the first match but winning the return game we know it will be a tough game.
