The Rainey 1st XI travelled to Belfast to play Saintfield 1st XI on Saturday 29th October. The game began at a very high pace with both teams on an equal playing field. Only fifteen minutes into the game, Saintfield was awarded a penalty flick.
It is a very rare occasion when a flick would be awarded in a game. Saintfield put the ball to the back of the net, leaving the score 1-0 to Saintfield. Rainey strived to equalise and had the majority of the play for the rest of the game.
However, unfortunately, despite great plays by Claire Mulholland and Megan Mulholland working together and great shots on goal by Lorraine Hyndman, Cristine McClure and Nicole Heaney we could not equalise. Despite playing against the wind in the second half, the Rainey raised the tempo in the last fifteen minutes of the game and were attacking constantly.
However, with any break Saintfield made, the defence were resilient with strong saves from goalie, Nicole Badger. Hopefully, next week Rainey 1stXI can prove their skills by putting goals into the back of the net.
Man of the Match: Claire Mulholland
Team: Nicole Badger, Dawn Mitchell, Jane Allen, Louise McMaster, Catherine Walsh, Maeve McNally, Claire Mulholland, Rachel Clarke, Christine McClure, Lorraine Hyndman, Megan Mulholland, Nicole Heaney
Rainey 2nd XI travelled to Saintfield to play on the unfamiliar surface of gravel. The Rainey side dominated the play and throughout the first half scored 3 superb goals by Zara Bell, Shauna Donald and also Robyn Hastings who made good use of the penalty corner smashing it into the back of the net. Saintfield started the second half much stronger and broke a number of times in the circle, but the Rainey defence were on top form to stop them from scoring. Two more great goals came in the second half by Ciara and Shauna, leaving the score 5-1. Player of the match: Robyn Hastings.
