MOYOLA’s Chris Selfridge today won the prestigious North of Ireland Amateur Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
The 21-year-old, a student at Toledo University, now joins the ranks of famous former winners such as Darren Clarke.
He prepared for the five-day event when taking a best gross prize during the annual open week on the Castledawson course.
The seaside championship had been delayed due to a heavy mist while the following blistering heat made it a tough task for the local golfer.
A number of fellow members from Moyola Park travelled to Royal Portrush to support Chris, and they were not to be disappointed. After a close fought first eleven holes, the local golfer went one up at the par four 12 Chris Hurley from West Wateford, conceded.
At the 17-yards short of the green, finish six inches from the hole. This left Hurley needing an eagle to tie, and when he missed, Chris Selfridge was crowned 2013 champion.
