Skelly Moyola medal winner

BY two shots, Martin Skelly (17) won the May Monthly Medal Stroke Competition held at Moyola Park Golf Club, Castledawson. Also counting towards the golfer of the year,his winning return was 64, with Dermot Kelly (7) second on 66 and Fabian Cushley (10) placed third, 67. Best gross came from Paul Shaw (1) with a 72, while the handicap category winners were ; -3 to 9, Michael Speedie (6) 69 ; 10 to 13, Chris Mulholland (11) 68 ; 14 to 17, Brian Wrig

Next day brought the Michael McNamee Cup Stableford and result here reads ; 1st, Justin McQuaide (13) 40pts ; 2nd, Martin Kelly (20) 38pts (on better back nine ) ; 3rd, Colum Donaghy (13) 38pts (on better back nine ). Best gross came from Mark Hammond (-1) with a 70. Handicap category winners were ; -3 to 9,Brendan Lagan (7) 37pts ; 10 to 13, Brian Wright ( 13) 38pts ; 14 to 17, Michael Gormley (15) 37pts ; 18 plus, Mickey Leadon (26) 37pts. Here, 17 players win 4 golf balls apiece for their optional twos entry.

The first round draw for the Tolite Trophy, to be played by this Friday, is – M.Kelly v G.McGuckin ; G.Murphy v D.McGlone ; M.McEldowney v D.Mullan ;C.Kelly v G.Slowey ; G.Martin v P.McKaigue ; J.Ferguson v D.Dunlop ; R.Semple v S.Heaney; A.Millar, bye.

With a score of 38pts, Geraldine Kelly recorded her third win of the current season when she took top spot in the Warnock Rose Bowl Stableford. Second was Bernie O’Neill, 36pts, while on the same day, the Love Cup for handicap categories 30-36, was won by Rita Harkin , 31pts.This was by a countback from G.McLean with optional twos winners being B.Maguire, J.Evans and U.Henry. This latest results leaves the standings in the player of the year as ; G.Kelly, 21pts; M.Quinn, 13pts ; A.O’Neill, 11pts ;A. McCrone, B.O’Neill and M.McGoldrick, 9pts ; E.Totten , F.Glass and S.McMeel, 8pts ; M.O’Neill, 6pts ; P.Smith, C.Crockett and C.McElhennon, 5pts ; J.Evans , 4pts ;P.Johnston, T.McKeever, V.Beattie and A.Kelly, 3pts ; J. Alexander,M.Ferguson, A.Speedie , K.McKenna, and B.Slowey, 2pts ; M. McSwiggan, T.McKeever and K.McGoldrick, 1pt.

The full draw for the next round of the Watterson Cup is – A.McCrone and M.Overend v G.Kelly and F.Walls ; P.Hutchinson and M.McSwiggan v M.Quinn and B.O’Neill ; M.Diamond and J.Martin v S.McMeel and D.Logue ; S.Scullion and M.Wilson v B.Bradley and I.Henry.

These matches must be played by June 30. The Junior Cup team, captained by S.McMeel, played County Down at Ballymena and were defeated by a narrow margin. In the Miele Cup, which is played home and away on the same day, Moyola won one and lost one at Masserene.

Back in Castledawson, a superb effort saw Mairead and Ann win their match at the 18th hole, while Millie and Mary eventually lost out on a play off at the 23rd hole! Meanwhile, congratulations to the Challenge Cup team who defeated Balmoral at Castlehume.

The 3rd round of this competition will be held on June 21. And, anyone wishing to play in Pat Johnstons Lady Captains Day, should enter their name and handicap on the sheet provided. Closing date is Monday 21st June at 6pm, draw to be made on the next day.

There will be a prizegiving in the clubhouse next Wednesday, June 16, at 9pm sharp. Winners in the following events will be given awards – Cosmo Car Parking, Love Cup, Warnock Rose Bowl, Ulster Sports Trust, PGA Tankard, National Breast cancer, Womens Aid, 02 Perpetual Trophy and Golden Girls Trophy.

Cookstown and Magherafelt Lions Club will hold their annual charity barbecue and competition at Moyola Park this Friday. All proceeds will go to Macmillan Cancer Support with entry being 20 per golfer and 15 for the barbecue and dance afterwards. Saturday brings the annual Lady Captains Prize. A Stableford competition, it counts towards the golfer of the year and will see play off white tees.

On Sunday, there will be a Morning Sweep Stableford and also the BS Catering Open Mixed Greensomes. Play for the both will be from yellow tees. The popular Seniors ( over 50s) Open Stablefords continue on Monday while the ladies host an Open Day, sponsored by Cosmo Parking, next Wednesday. This will be an 18 hole Stableford with entry being 4 for members, 10 visitors with optional twos a further 1.
