Sky Blues finish runners-up in league

MAGHERAFELT Sky Blues finished off their season last Tuesday night with a 6-2 away win over Dungiven to leave them running up in the NI Intermediate League, three points behind champions Oxford United Stars.

The top three places in the league were: 1, Oxford United Starts, played 22, 56 points; 2, Magherafelt Sky Blues, played 22, 53 points; 3, Newbuildings, played 22, 47 points.

The Sky Blues who had already won the NI Challenge Cup, were also the league’s top goal scorers with 69 goals out of 22 games played.

Goal scorers in the Dungiven match: Ciaran Monaghan (2), S. O’Neill, Connor Monaghan, G. Stewart and M. Collins. Great credit must go to the manager Sean Monaghan and his assistant Brian Martin.

For the great season the Blues had - which started away back last year on July 23 with a friendly against league and cup winners Linfield, the Sky Blues then were runners up in the pre-season competition The McGrogan Cup.

They went on to win the NI Intermediate Challenge Cup and new runners up league, winning 17 games, drawing two and losing three games in the league.

Mini soccer

The Sky Blues mini soccer centre continues this Saturday morning at Spires Park for P4 to P7 children from 10am to 11am, costing 2 per child.

Annual awards

The Sky Blues end of season dinner and presentation of awards is on Saturday, June 5, in The Terrace Hotel. The youth teams dinner is at 6pm and the senior teams dinner 8pm.

The guests of honour are current Ballymena United defender Aaron Stewart, who will present the awards at the youth dinner, and his father Alfie Stewart, who will distribute the awards at the senior dinner.

Alfie made 240 appearances for Portadown over a 10 year spell and over 750 appearances throughout his career.

Club Sky Blues monthly draw winners for May were: 80, E. McCloskey; 50, P. Maines; 20 L. Martin.
