SOCCER: Sperrin Integrated College win national soccer championship

Carnegie Schools Cup Sperrin Integrated College - 2 Devensish - 1

THE u18 girls soccer team from Sperrin Integrated College beat Devenish college in the final of the national Carnegie cup.

Devenish started very strong and had most of the possession but Sperrin got themselves settled and started getting into the game when unfortunately Charlene Kenning was taken to hospital with torn ligaments, so year 9 Jessica McMaster replaced her.

Just as Sperrin were getting into the game the Devenish striker went on the break after a Sperrin corner was cleared out of the box and nicely placed the ball in the back of the net. Then the referee blew up for half-time.

As the second half got underway Sperrin came out looking for a good battle. Jessica McGurk got on the end of a few crosses but unfortunately the Devenish keeper was there to stop them.

Simone Magill ran up the line playing a through ball to Jessica McGurk who was then fouled on the edge of the box. Mykela Stewart hammered the resulting freekick into the back of the net to equalise.

Sperrin started playing really nice football and Devenish were under a lot of pressure. Mykela Stewart was passing the ball up the wing to Simone Magill who crossed it into the strikers who just couldn't get on the end of it.

As it came to the last 10 minutes of the game, tension started to rise and the game could have went either way, until Leola McErlane bust through their defence playing Terri Simpson in who placed the ball into the bottom corner.

As Sperrin were in the lead with so little time left, we concentrated on defending and the next thing you know the referee blew the whistle and it was all over! Sperrin had won 2-1.
