SOCCER: Tobermore move on after gr-eight Cup show
Tobermore United 8 Kilbride Swifts 1
TOBERMORE United won't have many easier games than last Saturday's 8-1 Intermediate Cup romp against Kilbride Swifts at Fortwilliam Park.
That said it took the home side 35 minutes to break down the Ballymena Premier outfit and with a little luck the visitors could have been two up before Tobermore got going.
Kilbride centre forward Glenn Miskimmon will feel very aggrieved that his early goal was ruled out for offside when he looked very much on and a few minutes later his fellow striker Craig Singleton steered a back post cross just past the post with Sammy Foster flat out on the ground.
But Tobermore rode their luck and as the game progressed they began to stretch their visitors and only for some fine saves from Kilbride stopper Lee Singleton the rout could have started much earlier.
Then Tobermore scored two quick goals that really took the steam out of the visitors. The first arrived on 35 minutes when Neil Lamont, whose pace had troubled the visitors all day, hammered home from close range and Danny gardener got number two when he converted from the penalty spot 3 minutes later.
Parsons, Cooke and Kelly all had near misses but the visitors held firm until the break.
Kilbride will not have wanted to concede an early second half goal but Tobermore piled on the pressure and Barry Kelly tucked in number three on 57 minutes after good work from Niall Cooke down the left wing.
Lamont then added his second and Tobermore's fourth on 63 minutes and Tommy Parsons added to Kilbride's misery with a brace on 68 and 72 minutes to make it six-nil.
To be fair to Kilbride they tried to keep things going and got their consolation in the 80th minute when Singleton fired past Foster.
This came immediately after Parsons missed a one on one for his hat trick against the visiting keeper at the other end.
However Tobermore weren't finished and to prove that there is still "life in the old dogs yet" Mervyn Pattison and manager Johnny Law repeated last weeks feat and scored the last two goals of the game in the 85th and 88th minute respectively to make the final score 8-1 and to round off a good days work.
Tobermore: Foster, Gardener, J. Campbell, Whiteside, McClay, McCombe, Pattison, Kelly, Lamont, Parsons and Cooke. Subs: Law, Henneghan Meharg.
Tobermore boss Johnny Law said: "I'm obviously very pleased with the result. Some will say that we should have eased off but we have been on the end of worse thumping's than that, albeit in preseason friendlies, and we learned from the experience and I'm sure Kilbride will do the same.
"I have criticized the lads in the past for missing chances so I can only be happy when we score so many. We will have tougher games ahead starting with Sport and Leisure this Saturday.”
