Hostage Party take battle of the bands crown

LOCAL band Hostage Party have been crowned kings of local music scene and have landed an amazing career-launching prize as they have won this year’s Battle of the Bands at Bryson’s Bar.

The competition was fierce in the contest which required acts from all around the country to qualify, win their heat against four other bands and then play in the final on Friday 25 November in front of a live audience and panel of judges.

The final show was memorable and saw guitars thrown across the stage, fans singing along with the songs and at one point the bands even invaded the crowd to join in with the fun! But above all there was an overwhelming amount of homegrown talent on display with from all the acts -Hostage Party (Mid Ulster), Steering Fail (Belfast), Sethway (Ballymena) and The Institute (Mid-Ulster) putting on great performances worthy of much bigger stages.

However it was local lads Michael O’Donnell from Cookstown, Peter Hughes, Kevin Hughes from Castledawson and Padraig Donnelly from Draperstown who lifted the prize - and what a prize it is! Three days in the Legendary Blast Furnace recording studios, 100 printed singles and a launch party in Brysons not only to celebrate, but to kick-start the careers of these local musicians.

The win has added to a successful year for the band as they have also recorded their first CD which received radio play on BBC Radio Ulster, BBC Radio One and college playlists all around the UK. The guys are also just back from a promotional tour with live dates all around the north including headlining dates in Derry city and MTV’s EMA celebrations in Belfast.

The band describe their sound as “melodic rock” - they combine epic instrumentals with melodic vocals and harmonies from the two singer-songwriters in the band, Michael and Peter. They are a rock band with pop sensibilities which makes for a unique sound and powerful live performances.

The new year looks bright for this promising band who are looking forward to getting into the studio. Hostage Party songs are available on iTunes, or you can listen to tracks on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/hostageparty.

Their next upcoming gig will be at the Common Room, Dungannon supporting local metal legends Novice.
