A Carrickfergus man was convicted at Belfast Magistrate's Court yesterday for claiming over £9,000 in benefits he was not entitled to.

Herbert Carlisle (49) of Glenkeen Drive in the town claimed Employment Support Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £9,843 while failing to declare employment.

He was given a conditional discharge for two years. The fraud was uncovered following an investigation by the Department for Communities.

He is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department.
