Update: Drivers urged to find different route
Sinn Féin Councillor Liam Mackle welcomed the start of the work and said it had been something his party had been pressing for since the new traffic light system had been installed.
Mr Mackle said the route was popular with walkers and he urged drivers to stop using the road as a shortcut.

“This is a main arterial route for drivers but also an extremely popular walking route.
“The installation of the pedestrian islands will go a long way to enhancing road safety particularly on this busy stretch of road which experiences high levels of traffic at peak times - this also includes a huge volumes of lorries.
“Whilst we do welcome the commencement of this work we continue to be concerned with the speed of lorries along both the Kiln Road and the Silverwood Road.

“We would also urge drivers to desist from using Kiln Lane as a shortcut.”
In an earlier version of this story we referred to Cllr Mackle asking lorry drivers to use a different route.
We have been asked to point out Cllr Mackle’s statement referred to all traffic using Kiln Lane as a shortcut. We are happy to clarify this issue and apologies for any confusion caused.
