70 miles for 70 years!

To celebrate 70 active years of Glarryford Young Farmers the junior and senior club challenged themselves to walk 70 miles around the country - one mile for each year of the clubs existence.

As past members had previously pushed a bath for charity before we chose to honour this memory by pushing a bath once again.

The bath push started bright and early on Saturday 24th May at the young farmers hall. A bunch of energetic and eagar young farmers set of and headed towards Cullybackey. Taking turns the bath was pushed from village to village covering just under 30 miles, including Galgorm, Ahoghill, Portglenone, Rasharkin and finally stopping in Ballymoney for the evening.

Day 2 of the bath push started off in Ballymoney, with the weather forecast giving rain, we had our doubts, but nothing was going to dampen our spirits. We put on our walking shoes and set sail for the Port. As we headed up through Coleraine, the farmers were starting to get hungry, so a quick stop was had to refuel before continuing on with our journey. In true Northern Irish fashion the weather forecast was wrong and by the time we pushed into Portstewart the sun was splitting the trees. The crowds were out in full force and with plenty of encouragement and cheering from the onlookers, we powered our way into Portrush were we stopped for the evening.

Monday was our last day and there was plenty of sore and tired faces greeted us for the 23 mile walk home. Lots of encouragement was required for the push up the hills out of Portrush. Luckily those not pushing provided enough laughs and encouragement to get us out of Portrush. Finally having almost covered our 70 miles we made it to the Station Road, giving the bath that last push we arrived at the Young Farmers hall only to be greeted by friends and family who had provided a surprise feast to replenish our depleated energy stored one last time.

A massive thanks to everyone who was involved in any way, including sponers, organisers, supporters and finally to all those members who pushed the bath.

All money raised will go towards our work for our two chosen charities this year – Clic Sargent and Meningitis Now.
