Festival goers enjoy great weekend at Oxegen

IT has recently been voted the greatest festival line-up in Europe and the Oxegen festival certainly lived up to its reputation of delivering the best bands and artists on the planet with a stellar line up and a weekend to remember during a fantastic weekend of Rock ‘n’ Roll at the Punchestown Racecourse.

From the Foo Fighters to Beyonce, Coldplay to Bruno Mars, there was something for everyone. The festival experience was made all the better by some of the best facilities around with top eateries, great entertainment and barely any rain - it couldn’t have been any more perfect - but back to the music.

Day one saw early performances from the likes of House of Pain, Weezer and Example, before My Chemical Romance rocked the Main Stage with hits like Na, Na, Na, Teenagers and Welcome to the Black Parade. Ireland’s own The Script took to the Main Stage on Friday night for a majestic performance, which had thousands of festival goers singing along with hits like Breakeven, For the First Time and The Man Who Can’t be Moved. A rare downpour couldn’t spoil anyone’s fun and a collaboration with Tinie Tempah for his hit Written in the Stars proved to be one of the highlights of the weekend.

Elsewhere, The Strokes entertained fans, whilst day one ended with The Black Eyed Peas getting everyone in the mood to party with hits like Meet Me Halfway and Just Can’t Get Enough. How could you top that?

Well day two saw the likes of British Sea Power and Hurts get everyone warmed up before a personal highlight in the shape of Bruno Mars as he took to the Vodafone stage, where he wowed the crowd with the number one singles Grenade and Just the Way You Are, as well as the huge hits Mars featured on last year, Billionaire and Beautiful Girls, just part of a fabulous set from a great new artist.

Scottish artist Paolo Nutini thrilled fans with his quirky style later in the evening, before another highlight in the shape of the magnificent Brandon Flowers in the Heineken Green Spheres tent where he performed solo hits, including the wonderful Crossfire, from his debut solo album Flamingo, before he had the place bouncing with The Killers hits Read My Mind and Mr Brightside.

Day two ended with one of the most memorable performances of the entire weekend when the Foo Fighters rocked the crowd until almost 1.30am. All the hits and new tracks from the latest album Wasting Light were included in a superb two hour set which included Learn to Fly, fan favourite Everlong and my personal ‘song of the weekend’ Best of You.

Day three saw early shows from The Saturdays, who filled the Green Spheres tent to bursting point before Ke$ha delivered a fantastic set on the Main Stage, somewhere she definitely belongs.

Slash took to the Main Stage in the early evening for a towering performance. How could he follow up his collaboration with the Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie, he asked. Well the opening bars of Sweet Child o’ Mine answered the question in style and sent the packed crowd wild. One word - wow.

The Queen B herself, Beyonce, attracted one of the largest audiences of the weekend and a set of Single Ladies, Irreplaceable, the Lady Gaga collaboration Telephone and several Destiny’s Child tracks before finishing with Halo, left fans happy.

Three days of incredible music was completed when Coldplay headlined the Main Stage on Sunday night. Chris Martin and co made sure the weekend finished in style with a firework and laser display that was incredible to see and hits like Yellow, In My Place, the superb Viva La Vida and the magnificent Fix You ended Oxegen 2011 on the perfect note.
