Scooby Doo helps WWE cash in on young fans

Last weekend WWE staged their thirtieth annual Wrestlemania event, featuring the final appearance from late Ultimate Warrior. A promotional tie-in to this year’s event is the Direct-to-DVD feature ‘Scooby Doo! Wrestlemania Mystery’, which teams Scooby and the gang with some of the biggest stars in pro-wrestling.

Scooby and Shaggy win tickets to Wrestlemania and, along with Fred, Daphne and Velma, travel to ‘WWE City’. While there, the WWE Championship goes missing and the gang learn of Ghost Bear; a monster stalking the area, likely involved in its disappearance. They embark on an investigation with help from some of the top names including Triple H, John Cena and Vince McMahon (appearing as themselves).

With a stop motion series and a tie-in with The Flintstones in the pipeline, this is the latest of WWE’s marketing aimed at a younger demographic. It’s essentially every Scooby Doo cartoon I’ve ever seen and anyone over a certain age will predict the outcome within ten minutes. Kids will love it, but I actually think adult wrestling fans (like myself) may the get the most out of it. From John Cena lifting boulders to Scooby Doo becoming WWE Champion, no guilty pleasure box remained unchecked.
