Have your say on future town centre development

To help achieve this the chamber have included a survey on the future of Lurgan Town Centre in this week’s ‘MAIL’.

Those taking part in the survey will be automatically entered in a prize draw.

Chamber chief Charles Gardiner said: “The Chamber of Commerce and Lurgan Forward have been tirelessly working to bring investment and retail shops to the town centre.

“It’s critical that the greater community of Lurgan support the commercial heart of the town and the steering committee of the Chamber of Commerce would like some feedback from the public as to how they would like to see the town developed.

“We have to recognise what’s realistic and what’s not. Lurgan must develop as a niche market speciality town and despite a very difficult economic climate there are more retail shops in Lurgan that there were a year ago.”

Charles continued: “The Chamber of Commerce Steering Committee are actively working on behalf of all of its members to make Lurgan a better place to work, shop and live.

“At a recent committee meeting it was decided to ask the public for input as to how they see the future direction of the town and it’s hoped that this will help the chamber along with elected representatives and council officers to give the people of Lurgan the town centre that they require.”

Of the survey itself, he added: “What we want to know is what type of retail shops would compliment those already existing in the town centre?

“We are actively pursuing a market in the town centre and we want to know what type of market people like to see? Suggestions include a farmer’s market selling fresh produce or a craft market.

“We are interested to hear what type of events people would like to see in the town centre? Maybe something like a cycle race or a go karting race around the town or more concerts at the plaza.

“Finally, Lurgan has reasonably good night-time entertainment on offer. We would like suggestions on how we can improve the evening economy. It’s not necessarily about adding new bars and restaurants, but possibilities include a get home safe system.”

The prizes up for grabs for taking part in the survey include vouchers for High Street Harvest and Henderson’s Fruit and Veg.
