Help yourself and help others

CAUSEWAY Volunteer Centre is “on the campaign trail” this week in a bid to boost membership numbers during European Year of the Volunteer.

The Centre is calling for members of the public to “help others by helping themselves” simply by giving up a few hours each week for to help in the community.

According to Marie-Louise McClarey, manager of CVC in Coleraine, volunteering gives a “good return on your investment” as it could provide volunteers with valuable skills for the future.

She told The Times: “If you volunteer you gain new and different skills, you get to practice your existing skills, contribute to your community, build your confidence as well as to feel a sense of accomplishment.”

“If you include volunteering on your CV it can often fill in gaps in your employment history and help set your job application apart.”

Marie-Louise added that 73% of employers would employ someone with volunteering skills over a person without.

Set up in 1997 to improve the volunteering structure of the North Coast and beyond, Causeway Volunteer Centre can research volunteer roles in support and care; health; tourism; administration; fundraising; charity shops; physical and mental disability; learning disability; work with animals etc..
