SDC Trailers temporarily close operations at Toome and Antrim 'during these challenging times.'
Mid Ulster MP Francie Molloy has welcomed the decision by SDC Trailers to temporarily close operations in Toome and Antrim.
"I have been in ongoing discussions with the company and pressed them to put the interests of the workers first," he said.
"This decision is good news for workers and the families. SDC is a major employer in the area and want to recognise this step. Had the British government been clearer in its message then this could have been taken days ago.
“I would urge other major employers to take similar decisions. If your work is not essential at this critical time then you need to close to protect the health of your workers.
"Where the operations are essential then you need to ensure safe working practices are implemented immediately.”
SDC Trailers confirmed the decision to temporarily close the manufacturing plants in Toome and MDF Antrim as of today.
A spokesperson said: "The Health, Safety and Wellbeing of our employees is our upmost priority and whilst we have followed guidelines and taken official advice with regards to social distancing measures, there have been concerns raised from our workforce over the last 24 hours.
"We will continue to communicate with our employees, customers and suppliers during these challenging times."
