Travel company Tui has cancelled all holidays to the party resort of Laganas on the Greek island of Zante.

The move comes after customers failed to follow social distancing measures, and six clusters of coronavirus cases were linked to flights from the island.

Flights and holidays to the resort will be cancelled from Thursday 3 September onwards.

Holidays to Laganas cancelled

Although holidays to Laganas have been cancelled, trips to all other resorts on the island of Zante will continue as normal.

Andrew Flintham, managing director of Tui UK and Ireland, said that anyone who had booked to go Laganas after 3 September would be refunded for the cancellation.

Mr Flintham said: "Laganas is a popular resort with young people who traditionally holiday in large groups of friends.

"The health and safety of our colleagues and customers is our primary concern and recent cases show that some customers are not following social distancing and Covid safety measures.

"It is therefore the right thing to do to protect and reduce a now identified potential risk to others by no longer offering holidays to this specific resort."

Is Greece on the quarantine list?

Greece was removed from Scotland’s travel corridor exemption list on 2 September after a recent spike in coronavirus cases.

Travellers returning to Scotland from Greece after 4am on Thursday 3 September will have to self-isolate for 14 days.

Ministers have said they have taken this decision due to a "significant rise" in cases of Covid-19 being brought into Scotland from people who have recently been to Greece.

Greece has therefore been removed from the "travel corridor" exemption list for Scotland on public health grounds, but the country continues to be on the exemption list for England.

New coronavirus restrictions in place

Greece now has numerous local restrictions in place, including in the popular holiday destination of Zante.

The FCO explains that “Local restrictions are in place on the islands of Paros, Antiparos and Zante/Zakynthos”

These include:

  • Suspension of any kind of live events and celebrations such as parties, trade fairs, religious ceremonies, open markets etc
  • Prohibition of operation of all food/catering sector-related shops, services and facilities from midnight - 7am the next day
  • A ban on gatherings of more than 9 people, either indoors or outdoors
  • A limit of 4 people per table in any restaurant, except for cases where the party consists of family members, where the limit is 6 people
  • Mandatory use of face masks in indoor and outdoor public spaces
