Pupils at Cookstown High School have extended a warm welcome to their new Vice Principal, Dr Paula Downing at their morning assembly.
A native of Co Antrim and wife of Neil Downing, the Principal of Cookstown Primary, she joins the staff from Antrim Grammar where she was Vice Principal Curriculum. Prior to that she was a senior teacher at the Royal School, Armagh. Dr Downing will have responsibility for curriculum matters and the oversight of Learning and Teaching.
Doctor Downing teaches biology and will be an experienced and well qualified addition to the leadership team at Cookstown High School holding a PhD from the Queen’s University of Belfast as well as the Professional Qualification for Headship.
Speaking about her appointment Dr Downing said she was absolutely delighted with her appointment.
“I know from teaching elsewhere that Cookstown High School has a great reputation across the country. My focus will be on continuing to promote high quality learning and teaching to ensure that each pupil is valued but also challenged to achieve highly,” she said.
Commenting on her appointment the Principal Mr Graham Montgomery said Dr Downing will be a great asset to the school and is well placed to play a key role in leading the High School forward in the coming years.
“She brings lots of valuable experience from her time in other high performing schools and I am excited about the future as we continue to promote excellence, opportunity and support for all our pupils,” he added.
Dr Downing is a former pupil of Carrickfergus Grammar School. Married to Neil, they have two children, Thomas and Hannah.
