1.7k dogs lifted in city since 07

OVER the last five years an incredible 1.7k stray dogs were lifted in Londonderry.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Michelle O’Neill said the information was provided by local Councils.

Mrs O’Neill stated: “Dog control is legislated for here by the Dogs Order 1983, as amended by the Dogs (Amendment) Act 2011. The Councils enforce this legislation and provide statistics to my Department regarding its operation.”

Between 2007 and 2011, 1,791 stray dogs were picked up in the city.

In 2007 444 dogs were lifted, falling back to 404 in 2008, to 327 in 2009, and 287 in 2010. It rose slightly to 329 in 2011.
