3p fuel hike isbad for coffers

EAST Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell has told the House of Commons that the Treasury is losing out on a substantial sum in revenue through drivers from Northern Ireland purchasing cheaper fuel in Donegal and other border counties.

He made the comments in support of a motion that “at a time when the cost of living is rising and our economic recovery is fragile, it cannot be right to increase fuel duty by the planned 3 pence in January 2013.”

He commented: “Drivers in Northern Ireland, particularly haulage drivers, cross the border to the Irish Republic to avail themselves of cheaper fuel. Tens of thousands of litres of fuel per day have been purchased in the Republic rather than in Northern Ireland, and duty has been lost to the Treasury as a result.”
