Apprentice boys and girls up 222 over year

THE number of apprentice boys and girls residing in Londonderry jumped by 222 over the past year.

At the start of January last year there were just 540. Now there are 762.

Employment Minister Danny Kennedy revealed the number of apprentices in Londonderry in response to a query from Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney at the Assembly.

He stated: “ApprenticeshipsNI is a demand led provision and, as such, the number of apprenticeship places in Northern Ireland is determined by employers.

“As of 10th January 2011, there are 762 apprentices from the Foyle constituency following an apprenticeship. The comparative figure as of 10th January 2010 is 540.

“Although these apprentices reside within the Foyle constituency, they may or may not be following their apprenticeship with training suppliers or employers in that constituency.”
