Arts Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has paid tribute to the country music legend and expressed sadness at his loss.
“Gene Stuart was a fantastic singer with a rich, distinctive baritone that brought real emotional depth to his songs.
“He honed his performance and vocal skills at the height of the showband era, spending long periods on the road and playing shows virtually every night, firstly with the Mighty Avons and subsequently with his own act, Gene Stuart and the Homesteaders. He went on to record 20 albums that brought him chart success in Ireland and beyond.
“Gene blazed a trail that is being followed by many country musicians today. He remains an inspiration to many and leaves behind songs and music that will provide pleasure to music fans for years to come.
“My thoughts and sympathies go to Gene’s family circle and friends at this difficult time.”
