Ballyclare optician makes charitable donation

The Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice received a substantial sum of money from David Henderson, after he placed a wager with a customer.

David constantly reminded patron and lifelong Leicester City supporter Mr Llewellyn Hamill of the glory days of his beloved Manchester United. The trusty optometrist agreed to donate the value of Mr Hamill’s next pair of glasses should Leicester City lift a major title.

With the new Premier League champions being crowned, Mr Hamill returned to pick up his new glasses with the cost plus an additional top up from David Henderson going to NI Children’s Hospice. The fabulous gesture will fund a respite break for a life limited child and their family at the Children’s Hospice costing £500 and a respite break at home costing £100.

Mr Henderson said: “It was a joke at the time but fair play to Leicester City, that’s one result no one saw coming. When Llewellyn returned for his glasses, I was more than happy to honour our gentleman’s agreement and top it up. I think Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice is simply outstanding. Everyone associated with it deserves whatever help and support we can provide. It is a privilege to be in a position to do something to help a very deserving cause.”

Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice Community Fundraiser Catherine O’Hara said: “I would like to thank both gentlemen for this wonderful donation. Every pound raised will have a positive impact in ensuring the services we provide continue for the children, young people and their families using our specialist services.”

Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice provides respite and end of life care for children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. Practical, emotional and bereavement support is also provided for the whole family.

Care is provided at the Children’s Hospice buildings in Newtownabbey and Killadeas and also in local communities across Northern Ireland.
