Two Magherafelt DUP councillors have strongly condemned an incident in which sectarian abuse was allegedly shouted at members of the local Royal Black Preceptory.

Councillors Paul McLean and Anne Forde said Magherafelt RBP was parading to their annual church service on Sunday evening when two people began “venting abuse towards the dignified parade.”

They claimed the incident happened at Garden Street and that the PSNI was made aware of what had happened.

“Clearly this demonstrates the deep seated bitterness and hatred which still exists in the community against our Protestant and Unionist culture,” they said in a joint statement.

The councillors commended member of the RBP for not retaliating “to such bigoted and insulting abuse.”

They added: “The Unionist community will be carefully watching with interest as to what happens to these individuals over the coming days.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police in Magherafelt can confirm that they are aware of two incidents of abusive comments being directed at a parade in the town on the evening of Sunday May 25.”
