Bowler Billy is still jack-high at 96

AS the years go by and old age takes it toll, most people are forced to abandon the hobbies they enjoyed for so long.

But age has failed to slow down one Ballycarry man, who at 96 is still enjoying the sport that he has played for most of his life.

Billy Sturdy was born in 1913, just a year after the Titanic sank and a year before the outbreak of the First World War. He lived through the defining moments of the 20th century and witnessed the birth of five sons, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Billy was a founder member of the Ballycarry Old Presbyterian Bowling Club, which is just a few years shy of its 50th anniversary.

And while his hearing may have deteriorated over the years, Billy’s eyesight appears to be as sharp as ever and he is still actively involved in the club he helped set up all those years ago.

Orr Sturdy, Billy’s son, said his father has always been a keen fan of bowls and still looks forward to taking part in the sport each week.

He added: “My father was a farmer and retired when he was about 70. But he has been bowling for as long as I can remember and is showing no signs of tiring of it. He always looks forward to it every Monday and Thursday and has his bowls polished and ready to go.”

Orr also revealed that, despite his father’s age, he still enjoys travelling and only last year took a trip to visit one of his other sons in Israel.

He added: “When he is not bowling, my father really enjoys watching football. He also loves music and used to sing in the church choir. He has always been a great father and is very well thought of in the village.”

Vice chairman of the club, Ricky Nelson said: “Billy has always been a dedicated member of the club.

“He still comes twice a week and even makes himself available for away matches. He has enjoyed a lot of success over the years and has had his name on the cup quite a few times. And I’m not afraid to say he has beaten me a few times as well!”
