Bryson continues to grow during recession

A LOCAL charity has announced growth of 22 per cent turnover and increasing employment against the backdrop of the worst recession in living memory.

Bryson Charitable Group operates Bryson Recycling, which provides services to the Carrickfergus Borough Council area. And as one of Northern Ireland’s leading social enterprises, delegates attending the group’s annual general meeting heard that, despite the difficult economic situation, it has increased turnover to 24.2 million from 19.7 million in the previous year, and employment within the charitable group has increased from 613 to 642.

Speaking to delegates at the event, Social Development Minister, Alex Attwood MLA said: “The role that Bryson Charitable Group plays in helping to create a stronger, vibrant and cohesive Northern Ireland is an extremely important one. I commend the efforts over the last year of this excellent example of social enterprise.”

Welcoming the Minister and announcing Bryson’s ongoing success, Group Chairman Sir Nigel Hamilton said: “This is excellent news not only for Bryson and those organisations we work with, but also for the economy in Northern Ireland and Carrickfergus community, who benefit from the vital services we provide to unemployed young people, families in crisis and the elderly. For every pound that we earn, 95.5 pence goes back into the group to be spent directly on the development and delivery of services to help make peoples lives’ better.”.
