POLICE are investigating the confirmed poisoning of a buzzard in South Derry.

The incident occurred in the Castledawson area in March of this year.

All Birds of Prey including Buzzards are protected by law as Schedule 1 species in the Wildlife (NI) Order 1985 therefore it is an offence to intentionally or recklessly kill, injure or take any wild bird and/or if any person sets in position any poisonous, poisoned or stupefying substance shall be guilty of an offence.

A police spokesperson said: “Poisons such as Carbofuran are extremely dangerous not only to wildlife but the local community and police would advise any member of the public who comes across a dead bird of prey or possible bait suspected to be poisoned not to touch or move it and contact them as soon as possible.”

Police would appeal for anyone who has information about this to contact them on 0845 600 8000.
