South Antrim MP William McCrea has called for a Stormont investigation into the cost of the Ballynure bypass section of the A8 dual carriageway project.

Dr McCrea, who opposed the 3.4km route - part of the overall £130million road upgrade project - has branded the new stretch of carriageway “a waste of public money.”

The DUP man, who wasn’t invited to the official opening of the bypass last week, claimed that it has cut off “the financial life blood of businesses in Ballynure” and destroyed “prime farm land.”

“The full cost and value of this part of the A8 scheme must be scrutinised and I ask the relevant Stormont committee to hold the Minister and officials to account,” Dr McCrea stated.

“There is deep frustration and anger felt within the Ballyclare community over this waste of public money, bearing in mind this could have provided Ballyclare town with its urgently required relief road. I have requested that the cost of the Ballynure section of the scheme be made public,” he added.
