Coalisland crash: driver suspected of being on drugs

“You caused a head on collision which could’ve led to the death of another person,” a defendant was told as he was banned from driving for two years.

25-year-old Emil Gajewski was appearing at a sentencing hearing after being convicted of being unfit to drive and failure to provide a sample.

The court heard how he was found at the wheel of a car which had been in a collision on Ballynakelly Road at Coalisland on the afternoon of January 14. He failed to provide a breath sample and a doctor later said that he believed him to have been under the influence of drugs.

Handing down a two month prison sentence which he suspended for two years, District Judge John Meehan said, “You rounded the bend and went straight into the other car.

“The court rejected that you had been taken ill on the way to the station ... this was without credibility and malicious against police.”
