Budding gardeners in Mid Ulster are being offered free compost from the Council’s Recycling Centres from this Saturday, May 21.
The compost, supplied by NWP (Armagh), has been made from the organic material collected in brown bins and green waste collected at Council Recycling Centres.
Loose and bagged compost will be available at Magherafelt, loose compost at Cookstown, and bagged compost from Coalisland and Fivemiletown. Get there early as demand will be high and it is a case of first come, first served. One bag or one small car trailer load of loose compost is available free per household.
Composting is a great way for households to reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill sites, and the resulting carbon emissions. More than one third of household waste is made up of organic material which could be composted. Garden waste, fruit and vegetable peelings, egg shells, food leftovers, tea bags and cold ashes are all ideal for composting.
Your kitchen caddy is a great way of collecting your food scraps. You can put all your plate scrapings and food scraps into your caddy, whether raw or cooked. Once it is full simply empty the contents into your brown bin.
The average household could divert over a quarter of the contents of their black bin by using their kitchen caddy and brown bin, or the Councils Recycling Centres to turn garden waste into compost. Alternatively, you could try home composting – save money, reduce waste in your black bin and get blooming good results for your garden! Home compost bins are available free of charge from the Environmental Services depots.
The Council’s Chair of the Environment Committee, Councillor Christine McFlynn urged residents to take advantage of this opportunity. “Not only is composting great for the environment, but it can also be beneficial to gardens, as it improves the quality of soil, making it perfect for growing flowers and plants. It also reduces the need for packaged peat garden products and diverts waste from landfill.”
