COOKSTOWN’S Christmas lights are generating worldwide interest with a surge of people logging onto social media sites to see the photographs.
With 33,224 lights illuminating Cookstown this Christmas, both ex-pats and those with friends and family in Cookstown have been commenting on the festive brilliance on Facebook. In their comments on the council’s site, users are claiming Cookstown has the best Christmas lights in the province.
The site has attracted widespread interest following the posting of photographs by our very own photographer Adrian Robinson and Cookstown photographer Norman Bell. After Norman’s photo of the switch-on was posted, over 9,500 people viewed it, resulting in nearly 16,000 visiting Cookstown District Council’s facebook page over a two day period - similarly with MAIL photographer Adrian Robinson’s photo.
“This has to be the most impressive #Christmas lights of any town in the province #cookstown you look amazing!” stated one person. “Think its Amazing…So Proud to have a shop in Cookstown…Thanks everyone for Shopping Local AND Supporting Small businesses,” wrote another user.
Chairman of Cookstown District Council, Councillor Pearse McAleer said he was amazed at the euphoria that the new Christmas lights in Cookstown has created on social media channels.
“The talents of two local photographers Norman Bell and Adrian Robinson, has captured the spectacular effects of the new Christmas lights and has yet again put Cookstown town centre on the map, regionally and worldwide,” he said.
And he added: “The town looks spectacular this Christmas and credit must be duly given to the staff who installed the lights, to the traders who continue to attract shoppers from across the province to our town, and to the residents who continue to support the local economy and Council in their endeavours.”
