A Cookstown man who attempted to leave a supermarket with a holdhall full of drink, was given a six-month suspended jail sentence at Magherafelt Magistrates Court.

Rodney Barnes (28), Greenvale Drive, was also fined £100 when he admitted stealing alcohol, valued £213.86, belonging to Lidl on October 14 last year.

A PPS lawyer said Barnes filled up the holdhall and was walking out the door when he was stopped by the manager.

She said defendant placed the bag on the floor and fled the store. When arrested he denied involvement and told police he did not know Magherafelt had a Lidl store.

A defence barrister said there had been no reoffending since the incident.

He said Barnes had been using heroin at the time but had come off the drug, although he still “had a battle with his addictions”.
