Corey back home in Lurgan after ban is lifted

Mr Corey returned to his home town this week for the first time since 2010.

The 63-year-old was released from prison in January after serving over four years behind bars without charge.

He had been in prison since his early release licence was revoked by the then Secretary of State Shaun Woodward in April 2010 on the basis of ‘closed material’.

Neither he nor his legal team or the public has ever been told what the ‘material’ consists of.

Corey was given a life sentence in 1973 for his part in a gun attack in which two RUC officers were killed.

He was released from jail on licence in 1992 and was working as a grave digger when the licence was revoked.

Concerns were raised after his release when it emerged that a number of severe restrictions had been placed on him including a ban on returning to Lurgan.

It is believed to be one of the first occasions that an ‘internal exile’ restriction was placed on someone in the north.

It is understood he had been living in Tyrone since he was released from Maghaberry.

He and his legal team have been banned from speaking to the media.

Former SDLP leader Margaret Ritchie, who had campaigned for his release, described his imprisonment as ‘internment without trial’ earlier this year.
