Council hold minute's silence for former councillor

BALLYMONEY Borough Council held a minute's silence in memory of former councillor, Brendan Smyth.

Speaking at last Monday’s Full Council Meeting, Mayor, Alderman Frank Campbell, extended his sympathy to the wife and family of a former Council colleague, who served as a member of Ballymoney Borough Council from 1973 – 1979.

Elected as an Alliance member he represented the town electoral area.

Speaking affectionately of his former colleague Alderman Campbell said: “It is with sadness that I record the passing of a former colleague, Brendan Smyth. I have conveyed on my own behalf and on behalf of Council our deepest sympathy to the family circle.

“Brendan was elected to the new Ballymoney District Council when it was formed in 1973 and served until 1979 as an Alliance member he represented Ballymoney town electoral area.

“He had a keen interest in the sport and leisure and served as Chair of the Council's Recreation Committee overseeing its first capital programme including the swimming pool and a range of recreational facilities throughout the borough. More recently he served on the District Policing Partnership as an independent member.

“Brendan demonstrated at all times a constructive interest in the welfare of the local community. During his service with the Council he proved to be a valued member of Council and of the various committees on which he served. I invite all to stand in silent tribute.”

Speaking afterwards, councillors reiterated Alderman Campbell’s sentiments and wanted to be associated with his comments.
