Council meets health minister for LVH update

A LISBURN City Council Cross Party Delegation met with the Minister for Health, Edwin Poots at Lagan Valley Island this week to discuss his Department’s future plans for the Lagan Valley Hospital.

During the meeting, options for the model of care for the hospital’s emergency department were discussed. The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, which manages the Lagan Valley Hospital, have presented a number of options to the Minister, who is currently seeking further clarification on a number of these issues before a final decision is made.

The Minister also made reference to the ‘Transforming Your Care’ document which is currently out for consultation across Northern Ireland.

Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Stephen Martin, Chairman of the Council’s Corporate Services Committee, said he welcomed the update from the Minister as to where the decision-making process is currently. “It is re-assuring to note that the issue of access to the emergency department at the Lagan Valley Hospital appears to have remained high on the agenda within the Trust and with the Minister himself. The Council remains committed to ensuring a 24-hour model is developed and implemented at the Hospital as soon as possible.”

“Indications are that a definitive way forward is likely to be agreed in the coming months which is positive. We, as a Council, will continue to press for the future development and enhancement of services at the Lagan Valley Hospital site as required by our community.” said Mr Martin.
