Cannabis found in the laundry room

A young Cookstown man was fined £300 at East Tyrone Magistrates Court sitting in Omagh on Friday for possessing cannabis.

John Calderwood (25), of Tulnacross Road, was also ordered to pay a £15 offender levy in relation to the offence on August 6 last year.

Prosecution counsel said police carried out a search at the defendant’s home address and 10 grams of cannabis with an approximate value of £100 was found in the laundry room.

Defence lawyer Blaine Nugent said Calderwood had cooperated with the officers.

He said the defendant had even directed them to where the cannabis was kept.

Mr Nugent said Calderwood has had an addiction to the drug for some time.

However, he pointed out that this was his first offence of this nature.

District Judge Michael Ranaghan said he took into account the defendant’s guilty plea.

Mr Ranaghan said since it was his first offence it would carry a heavier financial penalty.

The judge also made an order for the destruction of the cannabis.
