Churchtown treasurer ‘guilty’ of stealing £22k from Presbyterian church

A church treasurer has been found guilty of stealing more than £22,000 from a Presbyterian Church in South Derry.

Derek Carson, 56, with an address in Portglenone, had denied theft from Churchtown Presbyterian Church from Tamlaght, abuse of position and converting criminal property on dates between January 1, 2007 and June 30, 2013.

Following a four day trial at Derry Crown Court, the jury of seven women and five men returned unanimous guilty verdicts on all three counts.

The jury deliberated for just over an hour before reaching their verdicts.

Sentencing was adjourned for a probation pre-sentence report to be compiled.

Carson was released on continuing to appear in court again on October 21.
