Electrician took new car for test drive

An electrician who took his partner’s sister’s car for a test drive, was fined £200 with six penalty points at Magherafelt Magistrates Court on Wednesday for having no insurance.

Sean McNally (23), of Chapel View, Bellaghy, was also fined £65 for speeding at Clady Road on March 10.

Prosecution counsel told the court that when the defendant was detected doing 46mph in a 30mph at Clady village.

The lawyer added that when spoken to by police and his speed pointed out, he replied “I’m sorry.”

Defence lawyer Michael Forde said the vehicle had just recently been purchased and McNally had asked if he could take it for a test drive.

Mr Forde said the defendant believed that his insurance policy would cover him to drive the car, but he was mistaken.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan gave the defendant 16 weeks to pay the fines.
