Man refused bail for son’sbirthday

A man currently on remand charged in connection with a £10,000 cash-in-transit armed robbery in Coleraine in the summer has been refused bail after applying to get out of prison to attend his son’s sixth birthday.

Jason Ian Kennedy (26), of Drumtarsey Road, Coleraine, is charged with robbery in connection with a raid on July 18 this year.

He is also charged with possessing a firearm or an imitation firearm with intent to commit robbery.

At Coleraine Magistrates Court last Monday police objected to bail and reasons given included the possible interference with witnesses.

Kennedy was remanded in continuing custody to appear back at the court via video link in January.

A previous court heard a gun was placed on the back of a cash-in-transit van security guard’s leg during an armed robbery in which £10,000 was stolen in Coleraine on July 18.

A police officer told that court he believed Kennedy was the get-away driver in the incident.

The officer said staff at B&M in the Riverside Retail Park in Coleraine said £10,000 had been picked up and the security guard was then robbed by two males, one with a handgun and the other with a crowbar.

The officer agreed with a defence solicitor he was not suggesting Kennedy was one of the two males involved in the robbery but that he was the alleged driver.
