Mayor urges defiance of would-be council bombers

MAYOR of Londonderry Kevin Campbell has urged the people of Londonderry to defy those who tried to bomb the head office of the city’s democratically elected local authority and come out and support Culture Night tonight (September 21).

Mr Campbell said the thwarted attack was an affront to the entire community but urged citizens to come out to support Culture Night.

He said the city is open for business and looking forward to hosting a successful series of events as part of Culture Night despite the disruption caused following the discovery of two viable explosive devices near to the Council offices on Strand Road today.

Hitting out at those responsible the Mayor said the attacks were a direct attack on the whole community. He said the incidents had prevented people from getting to their work and homes but that every effort had been made to ensure the city remained open for business.

He encouraged people to come into the city for the Culture Night events planned across almost 40 cultural venues today and later this evening.

“It’s important that the message goes out that attacks like these on our civic offices will not prevent us from working towards a better and positive future for Derry,” he said.

Equally, Chairman of the Londonderry Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) Thomas Conway condemned the incident saying that PSNI resources were needed to deal with tackling crime in the city.
