The seniors faced Foreglen on Saturday at Ballerin in the first round of the championship. The Bridge played against the wind in the first half but started bright with two points from Kevin Sweeny and a free from Peter McGrogan cancelling out Foreglen’s opening score. In the 9th minute Foreglen raced through the Bridges defence in a move which resulted in the ball hitting the back of the net and it could have been much worse a minute later only for a Gerard Burke block preventing a certain second goal.

A Foreglen point in the 13th minute was sandwiched by two frees from Danny Mulholland to tie the game for the second time. For the remaining 11 minutes of the half Foreglen took control and they hit six scores without reply to leave the half time score Newbridge 0-05 Foreglen 1-08.

Foreglens lead became 7 within a minute of the restart but soon after there was a stoppage in play as recently introduced substitute Paddy McGuigan was hit a shoulder from behind which resulted in a serious collarbone injury. Once proceedings restarted, McGrogan slotted over 2 points in a minute to reduce the deficit but again there were a series of stoppages which prevented the Bridge from getting any fluency to their game. Between the 51st and 55th minute both teams converted 2 frees each, the Bridges came via McGrogan and Mulholland to keep the deficit at 5. In the 57th minute Michael Bateson dispossessed a Foreglen defender with Danny Mulholland close by to pick up possession and he drilled the ball to the back of the net to make it game on. Peter McGrogan converted a free a minute later to leave the minimum between the teams in the final minute of normal time but there were 9 minutes injury time to play. In the 64th minute McGrogans fifth converted free levelled the game but unfortunately for Newbridge it was their last score as Foreglen hit 2 late points to emerge victorious. Final score Newbridge 1-11 Foreglen 1-13.

Newbridge team and scorers; M O’Neill, C Brooks, G Burke, D McKeever, O Scott, J Gilmore, K McCann, S Lynch, J Bradley, R Carron, G Walls, K Sweeney (0-02), M Bateson, D Mulholland (1-03), P McGrogan (0-06). Subs used P McGuigan, SP McCann, T Walls & N Sweeney.
