Northern Bank to ‘open all day Saturday’ - but not in Cookstown

COOKSTOWN will be one of a handful of Northern Bank branches across the province which will not open all-day on Saturdays, its been revealed.

This month it was announced that 21 of the popular bank’s branches will open from 9.30am to 4.30pm in new weekend opening hours being rolled out across Northern Ireland. But Cookstown will remain closed despite Saturday being the town’s busiest shopping day of the week.

Customers with the Magherafelt and Dungannon Northern branches are to benefit from the elongated opening times as both have been pinpointed to officially open on the new time frame from this week.

Speaking about the move, UUP councillor Trevor Clarke urged the bank to consider the possibility of making a similar change to the Cookstown branches hours.

“I welcome the news of Northern Bank opening all day on Saturdays but I would ask them to consider the possibility of rolling out these opening hours in Cookstown as well,” said councillor Wilson.

“It’s a busy market town and shopping hub and the town would greatly benefit from the extra opening hours. Of course all this needs to be done in conjunction with the staff and unions.”

Responding to a query from the MAIL on why the new opening times would not apply to Cookstown, a Northern Bank spokesperson said: “As of Saturday 23 June, Northern Bank will extend the Saturday opening hours at 21 of our branches across Northern Ireland.

“These branches - all of which were already open on a Saturday morning - will now open all day from 9.30am – 4.30pm. This is the most appropriate starting point for the extension of our weekend opening hours.

“Naturally we will be closely monitoring the progress of our Saturday opening locations and listening to customer feedback, as we always do and of course will always keep our services under review.”
