A MAGHERAFELT councillor is appealing to dog owners to clean-up after their pets.

Councillor Anne Forde said in recent weeks she has been approached by a number of people asking her if nothing could be done about the dog fouling problem in the district.

“I raised the matter at the last District Council meeting and was informed that although this has been raised many times dog owners seem to not take the issue seriously,” she said.

The DUP members pointed out that the council’s dog warden has on many occassions went out to try and eliminate the problem.

“People have complained that no one has been apprehended for allowing their dog to fowl on footpaths and parks. This has become a major issue across the district,” she continued.

“Can I ask all dog owners when they are out walking their dogs to please clean up after them.

No other country would tolerate this. Think of others who walk the footways and our children who use our parks.”

Magherafelt Council recently erected a number of warning signs in local housing estates in an effort to raise awareness among dog owners.
