DUP back Ballycarry halt plans

MP Sammy Wilson and Councillors Paul Reid and Gregg McKeen have raised concerns about the lack of footpath provision on a 170-yard stretch from Ballycarry train halt across the causeway to Islandmagee.

The elected representatives described the situation as “totally unacceptable and highly dangerous.”

After walking on the bridge, Councillor Reid commented: “It was a terrifying experience walking across the bridge, this was coupled with two cars passing at the same time leaving no space for any pedestrian or child accessing the train service, or just trying to get across the road safely.

Mr Wilson described the situation as “a fatal accident waiting to happen.” Councillor McKeen said he supported plans for further safety initatives such as a park and ride.

LLPG is lobbying for a continuous footpath on the bridge, a section of disabled-friendly footpath, a safe crossing point, narrowing the bridge to one lane, and intelligent traffic lights. Its ultimate aim is a drop off and pick up point, park and ride facilities and a footbridge. The elected representatives are to seek a meeting with Translink and Transport NI.
