SDLP MLA for Mid Ulster, Patsy McGlone, has said he is disappointed at the continued failure to invest in a newbuild for Holy Family Primary School in Magherafelt.

The Mid Ulster MLA gave a cautious welcome to the Education Minister’s recent announcement of a number of newbuilds for primary and post-primary schools, but expressed concern at the absence of Holy Family Primary from the investment despite repeated assurances that a newbuild for the school was a priority.

Speaking after the announcement Mr McGlone said, “The capital investment announced by the Education Minister is certainly welcome news for those schools included on the list of newbuilds. The construction industry will also welcome the £170 million of capital investment over the coming years.

“But there is real disappointment in my constituency that Holy Family Primary School in Magherafelt has again been excluded from this investment in school buildings.

“Time and again the school has been told that a newbuild is necessary at the site, and that the project is a priority for the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools as well as the Department of Education.

“Yet again, however, another list of newbuild projects has been announced and Holy Family has not been included.

“When I questioned the Education Minister about this specific project in the Assembly he, again, confirmed that Holy Family Primary School requires being rebuilt. But he refused to commit to funding a newbuild for the school.

“I will continue to press the Minister to make the required commitment to a newbuild for Holy Family Primary School. Everyone is in agreement that it is necessary for the school. The only thing missing is the political will to make it happen.”
