Surestart celebrates tenth anniversary

GOLD Surestart is now in its tenth year of operating in Cookstown, having been established in Cookstown since 2001.

The group offers services specifically designed for families with children aged up to four years old and works in partnership with local statutory services, community and voluntary groups and parents in order to provide services which are complementary to what is already there.

Surestart is a government-funded initiative which works specifically with families where there is a child under four years old.

Research has indicated that where children have access to early intervention and positive play opportunities then their long term prospects will be better.

The overall aim of Surestart is to improve the health and well-being of children under four so that these children are better placed to take the opportunities offered to them on school entry.

Surestart works in six electoral wards in the Cookstown area – Gortalowry, Oldtown, Killymoon, Dunamore, Ardboe and Pomeroy.

Surestart also provides help, support and advocacy to families who are new to our area, especially those families who do not have English as their first language.

Our administrative office is based at Loy Buildings, Loy Street, Cookstown and we currently deliver service from various sites – Derrychrin Primary School in Ardboe, services in Ardboe itself, Cookstown Primary School, St Joseph’s Primary School, Killeenan, St Mary’s Primary School, Dunamore and various venues in Pomeroy.

All parents, past and present, are invited to the tenth anniversary celebrations on October 29 from 10.30am to 12.30pm in Cookstown Leisure Centre. Contact the office on 028 867 69994 to confirm your attendance.
