Plans are being advanced for the development of a new Community Park in Moneyneena on a six-acre site adjacent to St Eoghan’s Primary School and the local Hall, An Rath Dubh.
The project is being headed up by Moneyneena & District Development Group along with the local Primary School and other key organisations within the area.
The Group have submitted a funding application to the Lottery’s Space and Place Programme and are hopeful that a favourable outcome will be achieved over the coming months.
To date, local community consultation has taken place with the younger generation with some very interesting ideas coming forward from St Eoghan’s PS, Gaelscoil Na Speirini and Naiscoil Na Speirini. Recently a workshop was held with the Thursday Club (the area’s Senior Citizens Group). Meetings have also been held with Fr Kelly, the local Parish Priest and with representatives from Magherafelt District Council to outline and discuss a wide range of plans for the area.
Whilst some of the ideas discussed to date include Community Allotments, Playing Fields, Play Areas, Outdoor Gym, Cycling/Walking Trails, Wildlife area, Sensory Garden, Horticultural Programmes and Training Schemes and a Cultural/Heritage Sculptural Trail, the local group are keen to look at the opening up and redevelopment of Moydamlaght Forest for wider recreational use. Negotiations have just commenced with Forestry Service and a follow up meeting is planned.
In order to progress these exciting projects further, an Open Night is being organised in An Rath Dubh on Wednesday 15 October at 8pm to outline some of these proposals and to hear from the local community - schools, businesses, community organisations and individuals and indeed anyone else who might have an interest in the area’s development. A short presentation will be given on the Community Park proposed and plenty of opportunity for discussion over a cup of tea!
The local Development Group and the various Working Groups look forward to welcoming you there on the night.
